    • As of May 2010, the national mean yearly salary was $84,360 for field sales reps who worked for technical or scientific companies, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). This national average used an hourly wage of about $40.50 per hour. This average is based on years of experience, the type and amount of educational background, and work location. Some examples of these types of outside sales positions include pharmaceutical sales reps or semiconductor sales reps.

    Salary for Non-Technical or Non-Scientific Reps

    • As of May 2010, the national mean yearly salary was $62,720 for field sales reps who worked for non-technical or non-scientific companies, according to the BLS. This national average used an hourly wage of about $30 per hour. Some examples of these types of outside sales positions include staffing sales agents, printing services sales reps or industrial supplies sales reps.

    Top-Paying Industries

    • These silver-tongued extroverts can work in a wide variety of work settings and industries -- and some pay better than others. As of May 2010, the highest-paying industry for field sales representatives was non-depository credit intermediation (credit card issuing companies and sales financing businesses). Salespeople working in this industry earned an annual mean wage of $110,380, according to the BLS. Some other high-paying industries include satellite telecommunications, at $107,940 per year, data processing and hosting, at $100,350 per year, and insurance and brokerage, at $105,870 a year.

    Top-Paying Locations

    • Outside field salespeople who work in certain parts of the U.S. can earn more than their counterparts in other areas. For example, according to the BLS, the average mean wage for field sales reps working for technical or scientific companies was around $129,000 in Idaho. The top-paying state for non-technical or non-scientific outside sales reps was Connecticut, at an annual mean wage of $76,230 per year. New Jersey was listed at a top-paying state for both types of companies.
