Clicker Training for Barking
Introduce the Clicker
- Your dog must associate the clicker with a reward. Start by clicking and giving your dog a small treat. Repeat this until your dog looks at you automatically when you click.
Shape the Behavior
- Find something that makes your dog bark; for example, have a friend come to the door or ring the doorbell. When the dog is barking, click and give it a treat. While the dog is eating the treat, it cannot bark. Click to reward the silence and give another treat.
Add Command Words
- Choose words for both barking and silence. Click, say the command and then give the treat. After a few days, only give a treat after the dog is quiet. Keep practicing consistently; eventually, most dogs will learn to be quiet on command.
